State of the Parties

Following the strong performance by UKIP in the three by-elections last week, latest opinion polls add to the growing weight of evidence that the Party is firmly entrenched as the third major alternative in British politics.

What a great evening!

Nigel Farage received a standing ovation at the end of his speech to a non-partisan crowd. He spoke on the EU, immigration, policing, local government, education and devolution, before answering questions from the audience.

We also heard a compelling speak from Alistair Baxter, the UKIP candidate for Police Commissioner in Northumbria.

So close (and yet so far)

Congratulation and commiserations to John Defty who polled a massive 43% of the vote in the Hetton Ward in Sunderland, but failed to displace the sitting Labour councillor James Blackburn, losing out by just 265 votes.

John Defty – Hetton Ward

John and his team fought a spirited campaign forcing the normally uninterested James Blackburn to take to the streets, with the help of his rarely seen MP, Bridget Phillipson.

A focus on local issues and real involvement by the UKIP team so nearly overcame the inertia of the almost religious, unreasoned Labour vote so endemic of the North East Region as a whole.

We are gaining ground and a continued presence will lead to better and better results as the local populous come to see the benefits of voting UKIP.

John Gough, former General Election candidate for a key target seat for the Conservative Party has announced he has joined UKIP.

Mr Gough was narrowly beaten to be the candidate for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland and went on to contest Barrow and Furness in 2010. This was a key target seat for the party and his campaign was supported by visits from David Cameron, William Hague and other top Tories.
Mr Gough explained:
“Since the election I have had time to reflect on the relationship that the UK has with the EU and how we might change it. At the same time we have seen the EU’s response to the Euro crisis: to demand more power for the bureaucrats in Brussels, the removal of democratically elected Governments in Greece and Italy who opposed their measures and the appointment of non elected EU officials. Neither the Government nor official opposition have seen fit to challenge this; only UKIP and Nigel Farage have spoken out against this.
I used to believe that the UK could achieve what we wanted through a renegotiated settlement. However I believe the facts have now changed and that this ability to achieve a renegotiation is not now an option and that it would be better for the UK to withdraw and chart our own course and that is why I am now joining UKIP.
I hope to bring my experience and knowledge to help UKIP establish a significant presence in the North East as we work towards achieving success in the 2014 Euro Elections.”
